80 Artisans for Kalamkari Fest in City

VIJAYAWADA: As many as 80 artisans belonging to Srikalahasti and Pedana style of Kalamkari will display their works at a Kalamkari Festival to be organised by The National Museum of Mankind - Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Bhopal, at Victoria Jubilee museum here from November 26 to 30.
The IGRMS aims at encouraging and promoting the Kalamkari art and artisans in Srikalahasti and Pedana through this art exhibition. The artisans will also conduct a workshop explaining the complete process of weaving the cloth used for Kalamkari art.
Speaking at a press conference at the museum on Monday, Andhra Pradesh archaeology department director GV Rama Krishna said that IGRMS is organising the festival for the first time in the city to promote Pedana as Heritage craft village in the state.
“The travel, food and lodging expenses of the artisans who are coming to exhibit their works will be sponsored by IGRMS,” said P Shankara Rao, Kalamkari festival coordinator and IGRMS assistant keeper.
