Playing the tournament as a wild card, city’s Potluri Supreetha, made podium finish by winning the bronze medal in the Asian Youth under-18 chess championship in blitz category at New Delhi on Thursday night. Supreetha, a class VII student of Viswabharathi Vidya Niketan, garnered five points out of seven rounds to finish third.

Year 2104 thus far has been a memorable one for this young girl as she registered a hat-trick of successes in three international events. Earlier, she won gold medal in Taiwan in the Asian School Chess under-13 girls’ championship and bagged WFM (Women FIDE Master) title. She created a record of sorts by increasing 210 FIDE points in the World Junior Chess Championship at Pune.

“She is gradually enhancing her on-board prowess. The need of the hour is to play more premier tournaments. She defeated players with higher rating like Mynzhasarova Kamilla (1828) of Kazakhstan, Shweta Gole (1913), Bala Kannamma (2056) and Divya Garg (1714) of India,”says V.R. Bobba her coach.

She drew with some tough players in the circuit like WFM Tranle Dan Thuy (2023) of Vietnam and Ovezova Mengli (1895) of Turkmenistan. “The only blemish was her loss to Enriquez Jean Karen (1898) of Philippines,” he added. Krishna District Chess Association secretary D. Srihari and District Sports Development Officer P. Ramakrishna congratulated the youngster for the feat.
