Andhra Pradesh government eyes private engineering colleges for office space

The AP government is planning to take on lease private engineering colleges in and around Guntur and Vijayawada to relocate government offices as part of the shifting of capital from Hyderabad.

As there is space constraint in the two cities, the committee of officials appointed to guide the government in relocating the capital has asked the commissioner, technical education, and collector of Guntur to identify the colleges and negotiate with them in order to part with those buildings lying idle to locate the "temporary capital".

"Many engineering colleges near Guntur registered zero admission this year. The infrastructure of these colleges is lying idle. So, the government wants to take the building on lease or on rent to relocate the directorates of those departments which have direct public interface," said a member of the committee.

The committee, consisting of D Sambasiva Rao (principal secretary, MAUD), Ajeya Kallam (principal secretary, finance) and B Sam Bob (principal secretary, T R and B) had visited many locations in Guntur, including Nagarjuna University (NU), on Sunday.

According to sources, the NU registrar responded positively to the proposal to locate some offices on the campus. The government is planning to locate the education and welfare departments there. Similarly, the space available in the office of the municipal commissioner and VUDA will be used to locate the HoDs of municipal administration and urban development.

In the meantime, the committee of officials, which on Monday interacted with many departments, has been flooded with suggestions that shifting of heads of departments (HoD) would be feasible only after the academic year. The next meeting with HoDs is slated for November 5.
