Plea for Apparel Park in Capital City

VIJAYAWADA: Apparel Manufacturers and Marketers Association (AMMA) president G V S Harischandra has demanded that the government provide land for setting up an apparel park in the capital region.

Speaking at the launch of ‘Garment Fair 2014’ at ‘A’ Convention Centre here Saturday, Harischandra said that Vijayawada is the epicentre of clothing business in AP but most of it is confined to trading. If an apparel park is set up, textile manufacture will be possible and this will not only spur the growth of apparel industry in the city but will also create jobs, he felt.
The fifth edition of Garment Fair held at the beginning of the festival season every year was inaugurated by Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ramamohan. About 100 stalls were set up by apparel distributors and dealers at the fair. More than 150 brands are on offer to the retailers. Apparel distributors from all over India have set up stalls where a wide range of casuals, formals, ‘khadi’, jeans and ethnic wear are made available for the retailers.
“Encouraged by the good response received last year, we have set up our stall at the exhibition. Demand for sportswear is increasing slowly and we want to make use of the opportunity to catch up with retailers and increase our business,” said Naquash Kajani from Hyderabad, distributor of Liverpool F.C brand.
The annual Garment Fair is expected to do `100 crore business. Besides offering business opportunities to retailers, the fair also keeps them abreast of latest fashion and apparel market trends. About 500 retailers visited the fair on Saturday. The exhibition will be open from 10 am to 8 pm Sunday.
