A Regional Cancer Centre on the lines of the one in Tiruvananthapuram in Kerala is likely to come up in State, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas has said. Participating in the anti-Cancer Campaign programme organised by Roots Health Foundation on the occasion of the Cancer Awareness Day at the Siddhartha Arts and Science College here on Thursday, the Minister said the State and Central governments wanted to allocate budget exclusively for promoting awareness about and treatment of cancer.
He said Cancer as a disease had a devastating impact on society. The families of cancer patients were both emotionally and financially ruined because of the high cost of treatment. Cancer patients were going to the hospitals at a late stage because of poor awareness, he said.
He said the Tata group was coming up with a good cancer hospital at Visakhapatnam and the State Government was coming up with cancer hospitals at Nellore and Chinnakakani.
Non-Governmental Organisations had to work in coordination with government agencies to promote awareness about the disease, he said.
Roots Health Foundation chairman P.V.S. Vijaya Bhaskar, honorary advisor N.Murali Krishna and others spoke.
