Seven More Cotton Buying Centres Proposed in State

VIJAYAWADA: Even as cotton cultivation expanded to several thousands of acres in the state, the agriculture marketing department sent proposals to the Centre through Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) for setting up seven more cotton purchasing centres in Andhra Pradesh, its commissioner and director G Venkatarami Reddy has said.
Addressing the officials from the 13 districts at sub-collector’s office here Friday, Venkatarami Reddy said that there were 29 cotton procurement centres in the state. Since cotton was being grown in additional 2.70 lakh hectares from this year, there was a dire need for new procurement centres. The new cotton buying centres, if sanctioned, would be opened in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari, West Godavari, Ananthapuram and Kadapa districts.
Insurance facility should be provided in every market yard and the market yard managements should ensure that cotton bales do not get drenched in rain. The purchasing procedure of cotton should be transparent and steps should be taken to keep mediators away from farmers, he underlined and asked the joint collectors of all districts to personally supervise the arrangements.
Guntur CCI manager R Jaya Kumar and joint director P Ravi Kumar were present.
