VIJAYAWADA: The Gujaratis in Vijayawada celebrated the annual ‘Annakut Utsav’ in a grand way at Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayansanstha (BAPS) mandir at Bandar road Sunday.
Devotees thronged the temple and offered around 500 food items as ‘naivedyam’ to Lord Swaminarayan. On the occasion, the disciples of Pramuk Swaminarayana Maharaj narrated the significance of the festival. This occasion is celebrated by the Gujratis two days after Diwali which marks their new year.
“’Annakut’ means a huge mountain of food consisting of fruits, salads, pulses and juices. After offering it to the almighty, it is distributed as ‘prasadam’ among all the devotees,” said Rameshbhai V Parikh, organiser of the programme.
“It is also called ‘Govardhan pooja’, and we believe by offering specially prepared food items to God, crops will grow prosperously and will reap a rich harvesting,” he explained.
On this auspicious day, the Gujaratis also perform Chopda pooja ceremony along with Annakut, during which the entire business community close their old books and open new accounts.
