“We had taken a tea break half-an-hour before the accident. Soon after the journey resumed, there was a big thud, and the bus fell into the water. It all happened in a flash,” recalled Venkateswara Rao, one of the pilgrims, who arrived at the Gannavaram airport on Tuesday evening on a special flight.

Vision was not clear, but the local people broke the window panes of the bus and helped the passengers in getting out of the vehicle, Mr. Rao said.

There was a Telugu speaking police officer on the spot, and he took initiative in arranging various things for the pilgrims. Local people helped in arranging food, shelter and first aid, said Sivaramakrishna, another pilgrim.

“It is tough to explain the reason behind the accident. We were travelling safely, and none could imagine that this could happen to us,” he said.
In all, 29 pilgrims travelled in the flight, and they thanked the State Government for extending support and arranging their immediate transportation to Vijayawada.
Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, Excise Minister Kollu Ravindra and senior officials were present at the Gannavaram airport.
