Naidu's 'ultimatum' to AP farmers

In some tough talk here on Thursday, AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu issued what seems to be a virtual ultimatum to farmers when he said that the state government will go for land acquisition if they did not agree on the proposed land pooling method.

"It is for the farmers in villages on the banks of river Krishna in Krishna and Guntur districts to choose between land pooling and land acquisition. Taking over lands for the capital city is now certain," he told mediapersons at the end of his whirlwind tour of Vijayawada.

While cautioning the farmers against expecting crores of rupees as compensation from the government in return for their lands, Naidu said the capital city will be constructed keeping in view the future requirements of the state and not merely the immediate needs of individuals.

"We are committed to see that every land owner gets benefited from the land pooling system because I want to make the capital a people's capital. If someone is really not interested in the land pooling system, he may be forced to give up his lands under land acquisition. There is no question of going back from here," said Naidu, clearly deviating from his initial line of thought against forcible acquisition.

Regarding the choice of Vijayawada as the location of capital city, Naidu said, "Many people have brought pressure on me against locating the capital in Vijayawada. I have taken a courageous decision and I will go ahead with the same zeal. There is no question of going back."he work on the new capital city will be launched at the earliest and a final call on shifting the state-level offices from Hyderabad to Vijayawada will be taken in a couple of days, he said.
