VIJAYAWADA: Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) member and YSRCP leader MVS Nagi Reddy has demanded that the government take the responsibility of paying the farmers’ insurance premiums, the last date for which has expired on Sept 15.
Addressing a press conference here Saturday, he said as the Telugu Desam government had assured the farmers of payment of their crop insurance premiums, they did not pay the same and the last date had elapsed. But now the farmers were facing the threat of being classified as defaulters, he said and added, “If the government is committed to the welfare of farmers, it should should immediately pay farm insurance premiums.”
Criticising the meagre allocation for the Farmers’ Empowerment Corporation and the lack of clarity on loan waiver, he said Rs.5,000 crore allocated to the Corporation would be sufficient only for the payment of interests. Interests would pile up and place and additional burden on the farmers. Besides restricting the loan waiver amount to Rs 1.5 lakh, the government had also exempted horticultural crops from it.
He said the YSRCP would hold statewide protests on Nov 5 against the failure of the government in implementing loan waiver.
Meanwhile, a three-member team of YSRCP comprising V Vijaya Sai Reddy, Ummareddy Venkateswarlu and S Prasada Raju reviewed the party’s position in Krishna district.
Gudivada MLA Kodali Nani, who was present on the occasion, said that while YSRCP president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy had explained to the people about the difficulties in loan waiver during the campaign for General Elections, Chandrababu Naidu had cheated the public by making false promises.
